More work in the garden...

I've been working in the garden again today. Not the best of jobs but it has to be done.

In the back garden we have an outside loo, which is joined to a brick outhouse. This outhouse has a lean-to conservatory thing that has seen better days! This is it:

Yes, those windows really are stuck to each other with SELLOTAPE!!! If I had my own way, I would just pull it down, attach an awning to the outhouse and use the space as a covered dining area. Alas, the house is rented so the landlords probably wouldn't let us and even if they did, I wouldn't want to spend that kind of money in a house I don't own... So, I scraped the flakiest bits of paint away, sanded a bit (I'm not very patient with sanding!), added the wooden bits between the windows and then glossed the short side. I've got the long side to do tomorrow, then it will be finished. It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but I think it's much better than it was!

I thought I could perhaps get some kind of fast-climbing plant to maybe put in the ground on the long side and in pots on the short side so that it can grow up the wooden frame and make it look a bit nicer. Any ideas what kind of plant would be good for this? Answers on a postcard please!!

Ooh, one more pic to share with you. It's a very dull subject but I really like it. Taken with Hipstamatic for iPhone.

More work to do tomorrow and I'll share more pics.

  1. What a fantastic paint job, you can really see the difference. I always find that the promise of a fish supper at the end of the day makes DIY much more bearable.

  2. I adore DIY but I agree that when I used to live in private rented houses it takes away the sense of achievement a bit and you cut corners, why waste money on someone else's house, after all. I suggest golden hops for thick, quick growing summer cover and a fast growing evergreen ivy for all year round.

  3. You have done a great job there Kev you can notice the difference..clematis is a lovely climbing plant but don't think it will grow that fast to start with..maybe ask at the garden centre?

  4. It looks great Kev. How about using it as a greenhouse ? Ivy climbs fast, and if you don't like your landlord you could always get Bindweed, pretty flowers, no need to water and climbs over everything in absolutely no time (I swear you can watch it grow). But I could see that little lean-to/conservatory thingie as the perfect place to grow some of the more exotic fruit and veg, how about Bananas ? Or even cocoa and coffee ?
